Other Projects: While
associated with this firm:
Del Webb's Kahuku Resort
( now the Turtle Bay Hilton ): Project area included the grounds around
the condominiums, hotel, golf course, the beach and water front along Turtle
Bay.
Assignment: The condominiums were build and some occupied. The
roads and parking in place and previous consultants from out of state were gone.
Problem: Parking areas were full of tree and shrub containers,
and there were no irrigation and planting plans.
Process: Barry flagged locations for
irrigation heads. The installation crews trenched and installed the irrigation
equipment behind him. After the irrigation was installed and tested, he sited
all the tree and shrub containers for the planting crews.
Master Plan: Kona Coast, Island of Hawaii:
Long term development plan centered around the
community of Kailua, including: Kings Beach, waterfront, the Church plaza,
commercial properties and up-country lands.
The Study: Clarified options for residents and commercial
interests, while mitigating conflict between cars, pedestrians and pressures for
development.
Poli Overlook, Honolulu, Hawaii:
Site plan and design elements for site at the top of the Nuuanu Valley, which
overlooks the windward side of the island.
The Challenge: This is a historical site: where King
Kamehameha won a decisive battle for the Island of Oahu.
National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl), Honolulu,
Hawaii: Ten year master plan design to
resolve current problems while planning for the future.
Problem: Originally built in the late 1940s, this monument to
those lost in World War Two had many problems. This site was approaching
capacity, experiencing significant conflicts between tourists, cemetery users
and vehicles.
Product: Barry provided the text, photos and supporting
diagrams for the Master Plan Report. As the project was approaching its
conclusion, the Army Signal Corps had him write and direct a film describing the
master plan process. The Master Plan and supporting film were presented to the
Veterans Administration in Washington D.C.
