Landscape Architecture:
Background:
The field of "Landscape Architecture" was not recognized by City, County, State or Federal Agencies until 1898. This was many years after New York City's Central Park and Boston's public park system were designed, installed and enjoyed for a good many years by the public.

California and Hawaii: The profession of Landscape Architecture became licensed in the State of California in the early 1960’s and Hawaii in 1969-70.

Range of Work: The Landscape Architect's range of responsibility includes: land use planning and design up to a regional scale. The assignment may be unimproved property or the property containing architectural features, either before or after these features are constructed.

Scope: Project assignments can vary dramatically. For example Barry's work includes:  National Cemetery on Oahu, school campuses, parks, destination resort hotels, water features, roof gardens and a 35 square mile site plan that includes a small community and five miles of ocean frontage.

Assignments and Clients:
Project participation may be as the principle consultant, with related professionals as a team member, or team leader. Such projects include: public parks, recreation facilities, private properties, commercial sites and a variety of assignments from City, County, State or Federal Agencies.

During Construction: Barry has served on larger projects as the on-site designer and as the Contract Administrator.

Related Professions:
Changes: During the last century, our world has taken quantum leaps into an increas-
ingly complex society. As the demand for engineering, planning and biological
studies accelerated, some disciplines have evolved from the landscape architecture
into professions in their own right, including: civil engineering, site and regional
planning, irrigation and water feature design. Do to Barry years in the profession,
he has 'hands on' experience in these fields.

Specializing:  Some Landscape Architects work for the government, many focus on com-
mercial, recreation, parks and/or private housing.  Many of the senior landscape archi-
tects, like Barry, prefer a general practice, or the challenge presented by a wide range of
subjects.

Sub-Consultants: From time to time as conditions require, landscape architects will retain
consultants from outside fields  including: biology, geology, engineering, anthropology, hor-
ticulture, arboriculture, soils science, etc.
